Simultaneous determination of cadmium, lead and copper in cereal flakes by voltammetry

Plant root absorb nutrients and contaminants from soil onto the cells. From the roots they can be translocated into various other tissues of the plant. Trace levels of metals such as copper and zinc are vital to plants but high quantities of heavy metals such as copper and lead can be physiologically injurious. Highly mobile cadmium can also easily been taken up by plants through their roots. It can accumulate in the cereal grains. Cereal grains can absorb lead from the air at a significant rate. Tin present in the sample does not interfere with the determination of lead.

An aliquot of the digestion solution is used for the voltammetric determination with the MVA-2 system on a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). The heart of this analysis system is a 797 VA Computrace enriched with the unbeatable Dosino technique for liquid handling. For your convenience, the method and relevant parameters are already implemented in the software of Metrohm’s 797 VA Computrace.

Tips

  • Method: The determination of cadmium, lead and copper can be carried out with a variety of foodstuffs (i.e. flour, cereal flakes, starch, pasta, edible oils, sugar, vegetables, wine and water).
  • Automation: Small series of up to 18 samples are easily processed fully automatic by the MVA-3 system.
  • Validation: For the Validation of Metrohm VA instruments using Standard Operating Procedures see our Application Bulletin 276 (Info Center).
